It was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott for a competition in 1924 to find a suitable standard pattern of kiosk that might be introduced throughout Britain. This design is known as the K2 pattern. It was later superceded by other versions the most common of which was the K6 or Jubilee kiosk which was introduced in 1936 and became Britain's standard kiosk for over 30 years. Over that time over 60,000 were erected. Some of the early boxes can still be found in remote locations.
