ABOUT TIMOTHY RICHARDS AND HIS ART

For almost 2 decades Timothy Richards has been gathering international acclaim as an artist, designer and modeller with a rare talent for capturing architectural detail and interpreting it in miniature.

He has successfully undertaken commissions for many prestigious organisations including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Harvard University, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Dorchester Hotel, the Totonto Stock Exchange and the City of Vancouver.

Production of each work begins with the creation of a Master. Timothy does this by studying and analysing photographs, sketches, plans, blueprints, artists' renderings and any other information he can glean. Molds are then created from the master - in case of some of the simpler designs it may be a single mold, in case of more complex pieces there could be 20 or more separate molds. The base material used is the same gypsum plaster which has been used in English construction for centuries.

After a model has been assembled and carefully sanded to remove blemishes the architectural details are added. These are made from traditional materials including lead, copper, glass and hand-painting or colour washes as dictated by the design. All of this work is undertaken in Timothy's studio and workshop in Bath, England.

Although these items are designed and made to function as bookends it would be a grave error to think of them as "just" bookends. These are truly works of art and have become highly collectible.

Lucinda Lambton, renowned architectural broadcaster and photographer, once said of Timothy Richards "To hold one of his exquisite models in the palm of your hand is to grasp the very essence of architecture."
